Ernesto Fiorillo, of the Barons of Falciano (Caserta, Italy), passed away on July 12, 2020, in his adoptive city of Provo, Utah, USA, following complications due to a long kidney and heart illness. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Ernesto was born in Bari, Italy, in the spring of 1935, on March 3rd, from the noblewoman Anita Cobol, (of Trieste, Italy) and Marcello Fiorillo of Falciano, (of Naples, Italy).

After a very short and happy infancy, he witnessed at the very young age of five, through ten years old, the horrors of World War II. Those terrifying memories, impressed in his child’s mind, would affect him for the rest of this life. To make matters worse, he suffered the early loss of his father when he was 14 year of age. This second tragedy also affected him throughout his life.

Having therefore remained orphan of father, he was called to become the head of family at such a young age. When he was 18, he had to immediately take a job in the same Credito Italiano Bank in Bari, in which his father had been Director. He did this to win the bread for his widowed mother, and his siblings, Giuseppe (Peppe), (13 at the time), and Paola, (6 at the time), for whom he always provided, and cared as a father.

He thereafter, and for more than 40 years, remained a reliable and tireless worker, serving faithfully as a key employee in that bank, honoring to the best of his capabilities, his father’s memory and sacrifice.

He numbered among that generation of Italian workers who contributed to the rebirth of the economy in Italy after the War, which led into the Italian economic boom of the 1960s.

In 1964, he married his beloved Maria G. Fazio (Fiorillo), of Noci, Italy. Together, they gave life to a son, Marcello, and two daughters, Federica and Alessandra, who survive him, and deeply mourn his loss.

A key event in Ernesto’s life was the courageous conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1977, at the age of 42. He was the only one, in a traditional Catholic family of older origins, to do so. This made him a pioneer of the spiritual works of this Christian religion, in the region of Puglia, as a missionary and a genealogist during the 1980s.

In 1993, Ernesto and Maria moved with Marcello and Alessandra to Provo, Utah. They later became American citizens, and continue to reside nearby. Federica remained in Italy, and has raised her family there.

Ernesto was a lover of “Musica Lirica”, or Opera singing. He was an admirer of the famous voices of the “Belcanto”. He was also an aficionado of astronomy, and a passionate traveler at heart, loving all the different places and cultures of the world.

Ernesto’s undeviating and relentless dedication leaves an unforgettable mark on the lives of all those who knew him, as evident sign of the highest sense of duty and commitment to God and family.

He is survived by his wife, Maria; his children Marcello, Federica and Alessandra; his sister Paola, and his grandchildren Dalila, Anita, Justin, Liam, Halli and Sydney.

He will be greatly missed in this world.

There will be a visitation from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 17, 2020 at Nelson Family Mortuary, 4780 N. University Avenue, Provo. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Provo Cemetery, 610 S. State Street, Provo, UT.

I will always remember when Ernesto and Maria spent Thanksgiving with us. We live in a very rural setting, our closest neighbor lives 1/4 mile away. Our home is surrounded by farm fields. After dinner, Ernesto and I took a walk and he had lots of questions about farming and the way the fields are irrigated. I invited him to come back in the summer so he could see the whole operation in action. I regret that we never got that opportunity. I will miss my friend, Ernesto. My love and prayers go out to Maria and all her family. Sincerely, Hal Baird
